Today's hi-tech society just wouldn't be the same without the ubiquitous computer, which in turn depends on an extensive and ever-expanding array of computer peripherals.
Given the fact that Hong Kong is one of the world's leading electronics manufacturing centres, it should come as no surprise to learn that many of these essential accessories are produced locally.
Take, for example, the innovative USB flash memory drives made by Aqua Bright Co Ltd, which come in different shapes such as a lipstick (AUL-01), a chocolate bar (AUC-02) and a car (AUC-01).
"The car model features headlights which shine when the memory drive is in operation," sales manager Paul Chan says, noting that it can come in any colour.
He adds that these memory drives typically have capacities of 64MB to 1GB. "They can be used with all kinds of computers, and prices range from US$10-13 FOB Hong Kong," Chan says.
The two-year-old company uses plastics and memory chips from Japan and Korea to produce more than 20,000 USB memory drives a month at its 2,000-square-metre, 100-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland.
Aqua Bright requires minimum orders of 500 units, delivered about one week after order confirmation. "Europe is our biggest market, accounting for 60% of our turnover," Chan reveals, adding that Aqua Bright also exports to the Middle East.
Data storage and transfer is one thing, but most computer buffs also want their machines to provide sound as well as vision, courtesy of high-quality 2.1 subwoofer speaker systems such as the SW-856 and SW-858 models manufactured by Winner Group Ltd. "The performance of the 2.1 speaker system is good, especially in terms of the sound quality of bass and treble," managing director Eric Ho claims.
Frequency response of the magnetically-shielded items is 45-20,000 Hz. "The price is about US$10-12 per unit FOB Shenzhen, depending on the output power," Ho notes.
Every month, the 13-year-old firm makes about 60,000 2.1 subwoofer speaker at its 20,000-square-metre, 500-worker factory in Dongguan on the mainland, which is ISO 9001-certified, meets CE and GS standards and holds a TÜV certificate.
The materials used to produce Winner-brand computer peripherals include MDF, ABS and HIPS, together with electronic components from the mainland.
A minimum order is one FEU, delivered a month after order confirmation to Europe, which makes up 60% of its sales. "We also sell to the US, India and the Middle East," Ho adds.
Speakers aside, a sophisticated computer user also requires USB power hubs such as the four-port variety with document stand and two LED lights (PC-184) from Sharper Innovations Ltd.
"The document stand holds the document upright, making it more convenient to type, while the LED lights enable the user to read the document clearly even without background lighting," marketing executive Janice Poon explains, adding that the USB power hubs cost US$2.50-5.50 FOB Hong Kong each.
Another popular product is a USB rechargeable wireless mouse (MW-701). "It also functions as a mini-charger for the two AA batteries needed to power it," Poon adds, explaining that Sharper Innovation's USB wireless mice sell for US$4.50-9.00 per unit FOB Hong Kong.
A minimum order of 1,000 of units from the 14-year-old firm's ISO 9001-certified, 6,000-square-metre, 400-worker factory in Dongguan has a lead time of 30 days.
Sharper Innovations exports to key markets such as North and South America, Germany, the UK, Japan and Korea. "Our biggest markets are the US and Europe, which together contribute about 70% of our sales," Poon notes.
Like Sharper Innovations, i-Tec Electronics Ltd fabricates mice and USB hubs such as the patented HB6009B model that comes in either blue or silver. "It is available in either 1.1 or 2.0 versions," adds director Ivan Shiu. "Its shape is different, with four ports that can be made to point in different directions."
The company manufactures about 5,000-10,000 pieces a month of each of the two models, which are made mainly from mainland plastics and electronics.
Another hit product from i-Tec is a patented compact blue-and-silver 8.2x4.2.0x1.7cm mouse and 4.9x1.8x1.3cm USB hub with accessories (MH1001BS), which weighs 40 grams.
Ideal for notebook computers, the mouse features advanced optical technology for high accuracy and reliability and comes with a retractable USB cable and a two-port USB hub.
Other popular i-Tec products include travel kits, such as the TK9019 set comprising a mini-optical mouse with laser pointer and clock functions, retractable cables, a retractable microphone headset and a pen-shaped four-port USB hub, as well as connectors.
The two-year-old firm uses ABS from the US, Taiwan and Japan and ICs from Korea, Japan, Taiwan and the mainland in the 50,000-100,000 computer peripherals it produces a month under the i-Tec brand and on an OEM basis. "We can make our products RoHS-compliant at the customer's request," Shiu adds.
The firm's 27,000-square-foot, 120-worker factory in Bao'an on the mainland produces minimum orders of 1,000 units, priced at US$1.80-3.80 FOB Hong Kong per USB hub.
They are delivered 15-45 days after order confirmation, depending on the order quantity, to major markets such as Germany, Spain, the UK, the US and Thailand.
With such a huge diversity of products on offer, Hong Kong is truly the only international sourcing centre for the peripherals that make perfect partners for every computer.
