Creative CookingKitchenware
Catering to a growing taste for the"sweet life", today's kitchenware brings greater convenience with innovative, stylish and multifunctional designs Quality kitchenware that is innovative and in line with the latest home decor trends is in vogue and available in great variety in Hong Kong, which has a strong reputation for such products. Leading examples include Stand In Industrial Co Ltd's kitchenware items made of silicone sourced from Japan and Germany. "Silicone kitchenware has many advantages," explains Sales and Marketing Executive Karmen Ho."It is heat-resistant up to 250ò¾ and cold-resistant to -40ò¾ and therefore safe in the freezer, dishwasher, microwave and oven. In addition, it does not absorb food odours and is flexible and durable." The latest innovation is to integrate other materials into silicone ware, she notes."High-end products are now being made with a combination of silicone and materials such as stainless steel, plastic, nylon and wood." This is exemplified by model STG, a pair of 12-inch tongs in silicone and plastic that features a spaghetti spoon on one side and a spatula on the other. Among other popular items are an oven mitt and a mini mitt that can be used as a pot holder, grip or jar opener. Stand In can produce kitchenware in any Pantone colour except metallic tones."We design new products in-house every month, but we make sure the idea is workable. We apply for any required patents before we introduce the new product to our customers," Ms Ho advises. The company's major markets are Japan, North America, the UK and Europe, while most buyers are direct importers or trading companies. Meanwhile, importers from the US, Germany, the Middle East, Africa and Asia form the main customer base of Sunnex Products Ltd. Among its perennial hot sellers is the 621 series of stainless steel knives, including a bread knife, cook's knife and carving knife (all 20cm long), an 8cm paring knife, a 12cm steak knife and a utility knife. The series also includes a 15cm cleaver."All these knives have ergonomically designed hollow handles, are dishwasher-safe and come with a 10-year guarantee," says Marketing Manager Jensen Wu. The firm's 421 series of kitchen utensils is made from high-quality stainless steel, with the 10 items featuring hollow handles with hooks."Hot choices include the 35cm ladle, 36cm slotted spoons and 36cm solid spoons," Mr Wu advises. Priding itself on its product development, Sunnex rolls out new items every month."A recent product that is selling well is the EcoCater series of electric chafing dishes, which includes rectangular and round shapes. They are more compact and can hold food pans of different sizes," Mr Wu notes. "The Sunnex brand is known worldwide for its quality and for offering value for money. We have been in the industry for a long time and now export our goods directly to more than 70 countries," he adds. No modern, methodical cook can do without timers and digital scales, which are the speciality of Oiko Ltd. Among its latest releases are cow- and pig-shaped timers (models KA-111 and KA-110 respectively), which have been developed following the popularity of its chicken timer (model KA-101). "Based on feedback from our international distributors, when people are considering buying a timer they want a reliable brand name, convenient operation and a lovely and colourful design to bring a sense of enjoyment to cooking," explains Manager Portia Chung. With a countdown range from one second to 99 minutes and 59 seconds, each timer features an LCD readout with a view area of 40x18mm, an attached rubber magnet, a belt clip and a stand, and runs on two LR44 batteries. Oiko's vast fun selection also includes the popular egg digital scale (model KB-102), which has a 2kg capacity and also gives imperial measures. It features an auto zero and turns off after three minutes of inactivity. At 192x138x27mm, the item sports a 53x30mm LCD and is powered by two AAA batteries. FOB Hong Kong unit prices are US$1.70-5.00 for the digital timers and US$7-9 for the digital scales. "We are committed to quality, and have loyal customers in Japan and the EU who appreciate our passion for regularly developing new creative designs," notes Ms Chung. New models are launched each April."We introduce new products under the Oiko brand at the Hong Kong Trade Development Council's Hong Kong Houseware Fair, where we meet with old and new customers," Ms Chung says. The firm also participates in trade fairs overseas, including Frankfurt, and hosts a private presentation for loyal customers every six months. With its creative designs, enhanced functions and high quality, kitchenware from Hong Kong is certain to appeal to all tastes. TEXT BY VICKI WILLIAMS FAST FACTS
