Clever ChoicesPrinting & Paper Products
Printing and paper products offer an increasingly popular alternative for gifts and packaging in these environmentally-conscious times, with Hong Kong's quality printing techniques adding that vital design edge Fancy finishes and product design are enabling Hong Kong companies to produce a vast array of paper products in all shapes and sizes to meet the world's growing demand for paper alternatives. Specialising in paper products, particularly handmade greeting cards, bags and boxes, Paddy's Collection Ltd relies increasingly on recycled paper. "Handmade paper cards account for approximately 70% of our business," explains Office Manager Vivian Cheung. "These include musical, pop-up, 2D and 3D cards for all occasions." While OEM orders account for most of the company's business, Ms Cheung notes: "We have design teams in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland to assist in customer requirements." The company produces folding boxes in AEA corrugated board and natural corrugated paper; heart- and round-shaped boxes in kraft paper, double grey-board and corrugated board; as well as apple-pie folding boxes. The one-stop-shop facilities at its Dongguan factory on the mainland include outputting, printing, die-cutting, foiling, varnishing, lamination, add-on craftsmanship and distribution. "Our paper bags are mainly used for gifts, as are our boxes and packaging for wine bottles and jewellery," Ms Cheung notes. Paddy's Collection's paper bags are produced in kraft, colour, carte blanche and black and white paper, as well as in fancy, fluorescent, shaped, and handmade designs. "Basically, we can produce whatever our customers require," Ms Cheung maintains. Concentrating on high-quality lenticular printing since 2004 to broaden design appeal has proved a successful business decision for e-Best Digiprint Ltd. "This specialised printing creates a 3D motion effect," explains Managing Director and owner John Ho. "We cater to OEM and ODM customers, as well as producing our own range of puzzles, cups and coffee mugs." The company produces magazine and book covers, logos, children's books and gift and premium items. "We have successfully passed the McDonald's, Hasbro and Mattel audits for toys and premiums," Mr Ho reveals, adding that e-Best Digiprint obtained ICTI certification for printing toys in 2007. At e-Best Digiprint, the firm provides a full service, including artwork, printing and after-printing, while its Extreme Lenticular Printing Fty in Dongguan manufactures the products. "The premiums market is our biggest sector and currently the US is our biggest market, followed by Europe and Asia," Mr Ho says. "However, we see China as offering huge potential." The firm is currently producing Olympic Games lenticular postcards for the Chinese government post office. "We have also obtained a licence to use the Little Shining Star cartoon that belongs to the People's Liberation Army to produce lenticular cards and labels for children's products and stationery," Mr Ho adds. "We plan to market these in 2008 on the mainland and will be developing a specific dealer and sales network." Another development area for e-Best Digiprint will be promoting lenticular boxes for packaging to overseas markets. "Few companies can produce these," Mr Ho claims. Focusing on what it knows best has enabled South China Development (HK) Ltd to maintain steady business despite increasing competition. "Some 60% of our business is manufacturing playing cards in a variety of attractive styles and packaging that carry our own Wisdom brand name," explains Administration Manager Irene Chan. "We also produce gift boxes in a wide range of shapes, sizes, paper materials and finishes," she adds, noting that playing cards are a specialised product requiring specialised paper, while gift boxes are manufactured mainly to OEM requirements. "Customers increasingly want colourful, high-quality gift packaging, using thicker cardboard and special finishes such as UV or matt lamination," adds Ms Chan. Some of the world's biggest supermarkets and superstores carry sales displays and packaging pallets manufactured by Guang Li Paper Products Ltd, according to Sales Manager for Overseas Markets Helen Ng. "All our products are tailor-made and go mainly to large stores such as Wal-Mart, Costco, Tesco and Carrefour," she says. The company is a leading corrugated display producer, manufacturing high-quality, custom-made displays, including floor, hanging and counter-top models, PDQ (Packaging Delivered Quick) trays, pallet displays, pallets and plastic hooks. Guang Li's most popular products are floor stands. "We are focusing on pallets, sales displays and standees, mainly using recycled corrugated paper," Ms Ng says, adding that the firm utilises recycled and recyclable paper as European and overseas markets are increasingly concerned about protecting the environment. "Our paper is usually three layers with a single flute, although we are able to add flutes according to a client's request," Ms Ng adds. "Indeed, we can produce any combination of paper structure required by our customers." The company offers a one-stop-shop service, with design teams in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland, from production of corrugated paper to printing and surface processing. "We have more than 50 facilities and equipment for printing and production in our Chinese mainland factory," says Ms Ng. "We also provide general weight, pressure, drop and vibration tests to ensure our structures are very sturdy." Be it large pallets or small, fancy gift boxes, Hong Kong's flexible manufacturers have buyer requirements all wrapped up. TEXT BY SANDRA JENNER Fast Fact
