Pearly perfection

Reinventing the wheel may be unnecessary, but redesigning the toothbrush into a revolutionary roller version is a different story for a company that has got its teeth into quality dental care.

The Roller Toothbrush from New Century (HK) Co Ltd marks a complete departure from the 150-year-old conventional toothbrush structure and aims to more effectively prevent dental problems and related conditions.

Dental revolution

"This toothbrush targets problems that traditional ones cannot solve, such as periodontal disease, gingival recession and tooth decay caused by plaque," claims Director Pearl Yu. "It revolutionises the tooth-brushing method to tremendously improve dental and oral hygiene."

She says the product cleans teeth, tooth gaps, areas around the crowns and indeed every part of the mouth thoroughly yet gently, without damaging teeth or gums. "It has overturned the traditional concept of teeth cleaning, which is hard brushing," Ms Yu says.

Hard brushing and other bad brushing habits are major causes of periodontal and other diseases, she says.

"People suffering from severe periodontal inflammation will experience bleeding when brushing their teeth. When this occurs, bacteria can enter the bloodstream, thus endangering health," she says.

"These people have a 2-7 times higher chance than others to develop diabetes, heart disease, coronary disease, cerebral thrombosis, premature delivery and stomach cancer."

Ms Yu claims that these problems can be avoided by using the Roller Toothbrush, which requires only 40.06 grams of pressure to be applied to teeth and gums, less than one-fifth the 223 grams recommended for conventional toothbrushes.

"By gently rolling it around the teeth, gums and tongue, the Roller Toothbrush effectively removes plaque and bacteria in every nook and cranny of the mouth. The gentle rolling motion also massages the gums and keeps them healthy," Ms Yu explains.

"This has an advantage over the 'up and down' brushing practice commonly adopted when using conventional toothbrushes, which tends to be too forceful and results in receding gums."

Clever construction

The strengths of this patented innovative tool, manufactured under the Dandelion brand, arise from the ingenious design of its roller brush head.

"The roller brush head features 22,000 nylon bristles, compared with 1,000-1,200 for conventional toothbrushes. These bristles are extremely dense and soft, thus able to clean teeth much more thoroughly," Ms Yu advises.

The small size of the brush head, 15mm in diameter, fits the tooth and gum structure, and so does the bristle thickness.

"Each bristle is extremely fine, with a diameter of 0.076mm, which is highly compatible with gum surfaces whose textural lines are approximately 0.08mm in width. Traditional toothbrushes have much thicker bristles of 0.12-0.14mm," Ms Yu says.

"The bristles in our toothbrush are evenly distributed and vary slightly in length," she says, adding that the differences are too minute to be visible to the naked eye.

"As such, they can reach deep into tiny gaps that conventional toothbrushes cannot, effectively removing any plaque and bacteria stuck on or between teeth and gums," Ms Yu says. "Besides, they give a better massaging effect that stimulates blood circulation in gums and saliva secretion, which helps to remove bacteria."

The Roller Toothbrush doesn't require the use of toothpaste, although Ms Yu recommends rinsing the mouth with water, salt water or mild tea after brushing.

Safe bet

In the case of traditional toothbrushes, she says, tufts of bristles are attached to the head using a metallic staple, which will rust over time. "We make use of a pressing technique to assemble bristles into a roller brush, and this is done without using metallic components," Ms Yu says.

"If the bristles of the roller brush become bent, they can be restored by soaking in boiling water for 2-3 minutes. Nonetheless, we recommend changing the roller toothbrush every six months," she adds.

The Roller Toothbrush comes with a 19cm-long handle, and is available in standard and foldable versions. "The latter has a foldable handle that is designed to fit into pockets and handbags so it can be easily carried around," Ms Yu says.

While the wheel is certain to remain the way we know it, the Roller Toothbrush promises to revolutionise dental care and keep teeth in pearly perfection.
