Staying flexible and versatile pays dividends for Prime Channels Co Ltd, which grew its business from PVC bags into a range of more upmarket products. The move came about, according to Manager Sunny Cheung, when Prime Channels received an "offer it could not refuse" in the most positive sense.
"We obtained an opening through a business acquaintance and factory owner," he relates. "We had frequently discussed several possible ways for us to help expand his business, both domestically and overseas, and one day we found common ground."
The factory in question had been established in 1995 with the aim of producing and selling in Hong Kong and on the Chinese mainland. Despite having professional manufacturing experience, the firm was at a loss when it came to marketing and designing for international buyers.
"This is where we came in," continues Mr Cheung. "We were selling PVC bags and we were able to offer this expertise to the factory in return for the rights to sell its products. Today, we look after foreign markets while the factory takes care of domestic need itself."
He describes how the quality and appearance of the products led naturally to hotels as a destination. "Higher-class hotels need better, more attractive items both for guests and their own logistical purposes."
In particular, hotels require various metal goods. "We supply sign stands, railing stands for hotel lobbies, and information racks and luggage trolleys," Mr Cheung describes. "Our best-selling lines are a ground-ash barrel and other types of litter and rubbish bins that find extensive use on hotel floors, function rooms and restaurants."
Bags are still available from Prime Channels, in various styles and with innovations that include heat-sealed, sewn, transparent and coloured packaging bags in PVC, EVA, nylon and cotton.
There are also cosmetics pouches, toys bags, gift bags and organisers. Most of these products are exported to North America, Europe and Japan, in addition to the Chinese mainland.
"We offer our bags with offset and silk-screen printing to make them more attractive," Mr Cheung says. "They are all generally of high quality yet come at a competitive price. Prompt deliveries are assured and customers' own designs are welcome."
Prime Channels wants to reach deeper into the market. "We will employ magazine and web advertising in addition to attending exhibitions," Mr Cheung adds, saying that Prime Channels will also focus on markets in developing countries. "Our first foray was the Chinese mainland, which is a good market with high demand," he enthuses. "Dubai, Eastern Europe and elsewhere in that area will also come under scrutiny."
Taking advantage of the breaks is a sure-fire way to stay ahead, and Prime Channels appears well on the road to more success.
