Paper Boxes & Files
Well-Organised

Paper boxes and files play
an important role: boxes are just as popular for holding stationery
and office items as they are for packaging gifts, while paper files
often include document holders - thus making life much more organised
at home or in the office.
Hong Kong manufacturers
are well to the fore in the global supply of these handy products. Rex
Industrial (HK) Ltd, for example, has launched a range of paper boxes
for gifts, including a charming red heart-shaped model.
"This item is made
from cardboard," says merchandising manager Jessica Yuen. "Matching
it, we have a red packaging bag also featuring a die-cut heart shape."
Rex also makes boxes using
paper, organza, PVC, fabrics and linen all sourced from the Chinese
mainland. FOB Hong Kong unit prices for paper boxes range from US$0.70-3.00,
while a minimum order is 5,000 boxes.
The largest export market
is the US, which accounts for more than 50% of sales, and Rex also sells
in other parts of the world, including Canada and Europe. Delivery takes
50-70 days after confirmation of order.
Set up in 1996, Rex has
a monthly production capacity of 200,000-300,000 paper boxes, produced
at its factory in Shantou on the southern mainland that employs 120-300
workers depending on orders on hand.
Also catering to the gift
box market is Hip Sing Paper Products Fty Ltd, whose catalogue includes
a pastel blue model printed with a striped pattern and embellished with
a bow. "Approximate FOB Hong Kong unit prices for our boxes and
file holders range from US$0.70-3.00," says marketing manager Eddie
Chow.
Complete with label slots,
storage boxes and document holders come in assorted colours such as
red, yellow, indigo and blue. They are made from cardboard, vinyl/paper,
printed paper, fabrics and PU leather, which are imported mainly from
Southeast Asia including Indonesia and Korea.
Hip Sing also produces paper
boxes for storage, some with lids made of PU and others using various
fabrics. One red-coloured model is decorated with a belt around its
lid.
Minimum order size is 3,000
boxes per colour, while delivery time is 45-60 days after order confirmation.
The 31-year-old company produces at its factory in Shenzhen on the southern
mainland, employing more than 1,000 workers in its 300,000-square-foot
premises.
"We export mainly to
Europe and the US, and we want to further expand our US sales because
we see room for growth in that market," Chow adds, saying that,
in addition to boxes, document holders form an important product category.
A company with lots of fancy
styles, Progress Packaging Industrial Co Ltd has designed a multipurpose
storage box in velvet with a patterned lid adorned with a tassel.
"This box is typical
of our design flair," says marketing executive May Chan. "It
is made from cardboard and covered with velvet on the outside and lined
with satin on the inside. It is pretty and yet looks classy, and the
user can put cosmetics or other items into it." This attractive
box measures 208x180x145mm.
Progress Packaging also
offers a furry square box series in a variety of colours such as red
and purple. These measure 90x90x60mm. "This range of boxes is made
from cardboard. If the customer wants, the inside can also be lined,"
Chan says, adding that cushioning for watches or jewellery can also
be attached.
The FOB Hong Kong unit price
of both models is about US$1.30, varying with factors such as quantity.
Minimum order value is US$5,000, and products are delivered 45-60 days
after order confirmation.
"Our paper boxes cover
a wide range of uses," says Chan. "For example, they can be
used with watches and jewellery, spectacles, cosmetics, cuff links,
and gift and premium items."
Generally, the most common
materials used include recycled paper, leatherette paper, book-binding
paper, wrapping paper, plastic, metals, PU, PVC, velvet and satin, all
of which are imported from Europe, Asia and the mainland.
Europe is the company's
biggest market, contributing at least half of its sales. Progress Packaging
also sells to North America, the Middle East and Asia.
Set up in 1990, the ISO
9001-certified group produces at a 15,600-square-metre factory in the
southern mainland's Dongguan that is staffed by 500 workers.
Another firm with catchy
designs is Union Paper Box & Printing Press Ltd. This manufacturer
produces items such as an Oriental-styled square box. "This may
be a jewellery box or a keepsake box," says director Angela Lui.
"The main frame is greyboard lined with satin and embellished with
embroidery."
Lui says the 55-year-old
manufacturer also produces document holders made from greyboard. "The
greyboard we use is imported from the Netherlands," she notes.
Production takes place at
a 600,000-square-foot, 2,000-worker factory in Panyu on the southern
mainland. The minimum order requirement is 3,000 boxes per item per
design, while delivery takes about 45-60 days from confirmation of order.
"We frequently export under our Union brand to major markets such
as the US and Europe," Lui advises.
Like most Hong Kong suppliers,
all of these companies design their own products and also welcome OEM
orders, demonstrating that Hong Kong has the paper boxes and files market
all boxed up.
