For example, the focus is clearly on outdoors enthusiasts at Alot Enterprise Co Ltd, a leading designer and manufacturer of binoculars, telescopes, magnifiers and spotting scopes. Binoculars are the ISO 9001-certified firm's main line, accounting for 50% of monthly production. It also offers standard full-size or standard compact Porro prism binoculars, along with full-size and compact power-zoom versions, at prices ranging from US$1-30 per pair FOB Hong Kong. Waterproof and fog-proof binoculars are also available. "Our binoculars are medium-quality models for professional use, while we're also developing military-grade products and diversifying into premiums," says marketing executive Christine Leung. Outdoor kits featuring a pair of binoculars, a metal compass, a metal waterproof torch and a nine-function stainless steel multi-tool sell for US$15 each. A new trend at Alot Enterprise includes products that combine optics and electronics. Among these are binoculars with an AM/FM radio or MP3 player and a spotting scope equipped with a digital video camera. "Kits form about 10% of our business," says Leung, "and teenagers especially like them because they find it convenient to have several kinds of products close to hand." Minimum order is 300-1,000 pieces depending on the model, with 45-60 days for delivery after order confirmation. The OEM company has a factory in Kunming on the Chinese mainland and major markets are the US and countries in Europe. Far East (Wu's) Industrial Co Ltd knows that dedicated travellers treasure useful manicure kits, game sets and shoeshine kits when far from home. The firm has specialised in these items since starting business in 1967. "Manicure sets represent more than 60% of our business, and we make more than 1,000 different sets," says a company spokesman. "For example, stainless steel manicure sets with a leather or PU pouch sell for US$2-14 FOB Hong Kong for a 3-10 piece set." Stainless steel or aluminium game sets, which include 1-3 games such as chess or dominoes and feature game pieces and boards that are about one-third of the normal size, sell for US$3-8 each. "Some of the game pieces are magnetised and some are held in place by pinholes," the spokesman explains. "Shoeshine kits start at US$2.50 each and typically contain five pieces - a brush, a cleaning cloth, polish, a sponge and a shoehorn - and come with leather or PU cases." Shipments go out one month after order confirmation and the ISO 9001-certified OEM/ODM firm - which emphasises design and works with well-known brands, department stores and importers - exports its high-end goods all over the world and especially to North America and Europe. For sheer novelty value in the travel sector, IQ Hong Kong Ltd offers headlamps, torches and key chains. Fitted with LEDs, these items cast their light in white, red and a variety of other colours. The Zoo Light series of pens, key chains and headlamps is popular with children aged from three years up to teens, and items feature hand-painted plastic heads of lions, tigers, birds or other animals with an LED in their mouths. "The headlamps have a white light so they can be used indoors or out," says secretary Fanny Woo. "Our Zoo Light items range in price from US$0.75-4.00 each FOB Hong Kong."Premiums are a strong part of the company's business, accounting for about 40% of production. Retail sales take up the remainder. The OEM/ODM firm also exports to the US and the UK, and requires a minimum order of 1,000 pieces per item. Delivery time after order confirmation is about 30 days. Meanwhile, single-use cameras made by Vastfame Camera Ltd are handy for special occasions like weddings and parties or for quick snapshots on the road. The company manufactures 35mm disposable cameras (with and without flash), at prices ranging from US$0.60- 2.50 FOB Xiamen. The number of exposures varies, depending on whether the model is a premium or intended for retail sales. "Normally, there are 27 pictures in the ones sold at the retail level," says sales manager Shirley Lam, "while a premium camera might have 8, 10, 12 or 24 exposures in order to meet a specific customer's target." Other disposable models include "message" cameras that feature a pre-exposed message like "Happy Birthday" on each print. Included among the one million cameras the ISO 9001-certified company manufactures per month are a variety of non-disposable 35mm models, including motorised, manual and underwater (to a depth of 15 metres) cameras. One popular model for children and teenagers is the Jelly camera, the front part of which features soft, squeezable transparent PVC. Available in different colours, Jelly cameras sell for US$1.50-2.00 each FOB Xiamen. Vastfame Camera exports mainly to the US and Europe and has a minimum order requirement of 1,000 pieces. Delivery time after order confirmation is about 30 days. On this basis, whenever the need is for leisure or travel-related merchandise ranging from gifts to premiums, make Hong Kong your next stop.
