Hip Lik Packaging Products
Fty Ltd is rightfully acknowledged as one of the world's leading producers
of high-quality transparent packaging. Now, the market leader wants to help
raise standards further with the aid of a quality-awareness campaign.
In particular, Hip
Lik wants to help international buyers, traders and distributors to understand
the real advantages of superior packaging compared with the expensive
pitfalls of inferior goods.
"The packaging industry
is somewhat under-regulated at present," explains managing director C.
M. Yeung. "Product descriptions are not always matched by the quality
of the delivered item, and if left unchecked it could lead to disillusionment
by international buyers."
The problem, he continues,
is how to ensure that buyers know in advance what they are getting. "While
there is nothing wrong in producing low-quality, cheap plastic packaging,
per se, unfortunately it is often the case that the buyer does not realise
just how low the quality is."
To illustrate his
point, Yeung refers to a batch of shoddily-packaged products purchased
in London, Paris, New York and other overseas centres. "Consumers have
told us that they did not like to buy these types of products simply because
of the poor packaging," he insists.
"As professionals,
we can immediately spot several glaring flaws guaranteed to repel rather
than attract the consumer. For example, we can see a faintly-smoky overall
colour, scratched surfaces made worse by scuff marks, and also by other
defects that we call 'floated marks' and 'fish-eyes'," he points out.
"In addition," says
Yeung, "on some boxes, the printing of the photographs and promotional
messages are out of register and blurry, while the finishing is crude
and clumsy and Scotch tape holds it together."
Hip Lik general manager
William Suen adds: "No one would accept such inferior plastic packaging
and potentially it could have a huge impact on retail sales."
The Hip Lik solution,
he says, is to provide buyers with a benchmark on the high standards that
are available. "Many buyers bear responsibility for the success of their
wholesale/retail clients and really need to understand that our high quality-clear
plastic packaging, with beautifully-printed illustrations, provides products
with virtually irresistible appeal."
Suen says there are
many good reasons for Hip Lik's professional approach and premier position
in the industry that has driven the firm since its foundation 38 years
ago and its emergence as Hong Kong's acknowledged leader in the clear-packaging
field.
"We have many thousands
of highly satisfied clients all over the world who credit the excellence
of our packaging with being the 'silent salesman' that resulted in literally
billions of sales," he claims. "They say that once their products are
on the shelves in our attractive packaging they almost sell themselves.
According to research, customers seem more willing to buy products inside
clear, see-through packaging."
The key to Hip Lik's
success starts by using only the best raw materials. "At the heart of
each high-quality packaging product is box-grade PVC imported from the
US, Europe or Japan, and a modifier that is greatly resistant to scratches
and static while remaining highly transparent and clear," Suen says, adding
that the special qualities of the plastic also ensure minimum damage during
transportation.
"Also highly important
is our soft-crease feature. With a simple pressing motion, each container
folds instantly into a perfect box," says Suen. "Cheaper products almost
always comprise recycled PVC with die-cut hard creases that are difficult
to fold into shape."
Hip Lik is also totally
committed to the latest technology. "We maintain our high standards by
importing state-of-the-art Roland eight-colour presses (Euro 2m per machine)
from Germany to ensure picture-perfect printing and the latest UV techniques
to speedily, yet harmlessly, dry the illustrations and lettering on the
plastic. As plastic is heat-sensitive, a good machinery is very important,"
Suen emphasises.
Cheaper products are
often printed using paper presses converted to handle plastic. "Such old
machines are usually choked with the dust that shakes free, gets onto
the surface of the plastic and sets up conditions for static electricity
that attracts dust films," Suen says.
"Awareness," says
Yeung "is a two-way street. Hip Lik might seem to be making lofty claims,
but the proof of the pudding is in the eating - and we deliver the superior
quality we promise, not one iota less."
