Coffee MakersA Home Brew
The world has developed an insatiable thirst for coffee and with it the demand to replicate that great, freshly brewed taste at home. Whether it's standard filter, espresso or cappuccino, Hong Kong manufacturers are perking up each day by producing stylish coffee makers from 15-cup capacities to fast one-cup brews. Producing more than 20 models of coffee makers to match all home capacity demands, Hong Kong electronic home appliance manufacturer Tonic Appliances Ltd offers everything from a basic filter machine with stainless steel carafe to a sophisticated 15 Bar espresso and filter model which also makes cappuccino. "Our target is to produce a full choice of coffee makers for all needs," explains Samantha Tam, director of the ISO 9001-certified subsidiary of listed company Tonic Industries Holdings Ltd. She notes that Tonic's most popular product is the combined filter/espresso/cappuccino maker, while in terms of style, black with chrome or stainless steel is proving most fashionable. "Our espresso line is designed by experienced Italian engineers, which gives our quality and design a strong competitive edge," Tam claims, adding that the company is currently working on a personal filter coffee maker with insulated mug, which can be transferred conveniently to a car cup-holder. Tonic produces about 40,000 coffee makers each month to meet all international safety standards at its vertically integrated 28,000-square-metre factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. The company imports espresso pumps from Italy, glass carafes from Germany and purchases stainless steel and other raw materials from a variety of other sources. Europe is its major market, accounting for some 60-70% of exports, with the US and Japan other key markets. Product prices range from US$17-35 FOB Hong Kong for a minimum order of two FEUs, with delivery 45-60 days after order confirmation. Focusing on more traditional but highly popular filter coffee machines, OEM manufacturer and ISO 9001-certified Team-Zest (HK) Enterprises Ltd produces 15 coffee maker models offering one to 10 cups. "We have 500 workers in our 100,000-square-metre factory in Shunde on the mainland, who can produce up to 100,000 units per month for our major markets in Europe and the US," explains marketing director Frankie Li. Team-Zest's models include the CM-301B 300ml one-cup coffee maker with permanent filter. This 230V~50Hz 300W, GS/CE-compliant product comes with a porcelain cup but can accommodate any size cup. For a larger brew, the CH-113 model 15-cup coffee maker has a blue colour water gauge, permanent filter, automatic boil-dry cut off protection and warmer function. With a rating of 230V~50Hz 900W, it is TUV, GS, and CE approved. Team-Zest's prices range from US$3-5 FOB Hong Kong for a minimum order of 3,000 units, delivered 30 days after order confirmation. Another company concentrating on the filter coffee maker market is Mantex Industries Ltd, a trading company that produces a variety of models. These range from the XZ 603 single-serve machine, which comes with an option of a ceramic or PS cup, to the XZ 628A 10-12 cup 800W model with anti-drip valve and swing-out filter, and the 10-12 cup attractive black plastic with silver trim 800W XEL 628 model which features anti-drip valve and glass carafe. "We produce some 30,000 coffee makers a month at our associate factories in the mainland's Guangdong Province, and 70-80% of these go to major markets in Europe, along with other markets such as Chile and Argentina in South America," explains director T.M. Wong. Providing added convenience to home coffee makers spurred electronic household appliance company Oriental Universe Industries Ltd to produce its latest model, the CM-229C, which provides a 24-hour programmable timer with LCD. This 10-12 cup 230-240V~50Hz 850W model is equipped with a two-hour automatic shut off, ready-to-serve alert, illuminated on/off switch, stainless steel barrel, hinged lid water container, water level indicator and detachable filter holder for a 1x4 filter size. It also offers an optional permanent filter as well as an anti-drip feature, a Teflon-coated warm plate and a glass carafe with a detachable hinged lid. "We have been producing coffee machines for more than seven years and manufacture four main models, including a range of stylish espresso and cappuccino makers," notes executive director Eric So. These include the EM 208, 209 and 210 range of 230V~50Hz, 850W 1-4 cup models with 3.5 Bar pressure, safety pressure release valve, milk frothing nozzle, glass carafe, detachable drip tray for easy cleaning and stainless steel accessories such as a heating plate, coffee filter and coffee grind spoon with wrench. Some 1,000 workers can produce 40,000 pieces per model per month at the company's 15,000-square-metre factory in Dongguan. Europe is Oriental's biggest market for coffee makers, accounting for 60% of exports, with the remainder bound for Australia, Asia and South America. Prices range from US$7.50 FOB Hong Kong for the basic coffee maker to US$12.50 for the stainless steel coffee maker with timer. Minimum order is 2,000 pieces, delivered 50 days after order confirmation. Prompt delivery combined with highly competitive prices, top quality, modern designs and international safety standards are encouraging people around the world to choose Hong Kong coffee makers to brew that great cup of coffee.
