Endorsement from the prestigious Union des Foires Internationales organisation and Trade Fair Certification from the US Department of Commerce have reaffirmed the show's hard-earned reputation as a jewellery industry event that is simply not to be missed. This year's show will cover five exhibition halls, translating into an additional 9,000 square metres of gross space to house more exhibit categories and product selections. The jewellery pavilions will include Belgium, India (new), Israel, Italy, Korea, Singapore (new), Taiwan, Thailand and the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA). Major product categories to be displayed cover 24K fine gold jewellery, antique jewellery, brand-name watches, coloured gemstones, complete watches and clocks, cultured pearls, diamonds, diamond jewellery, freshwater pearls, gemset jewellery, jewellery carvings and display ornaments, jewellery display and packaging materials, jewellery machinery, tools and equipment, jewellery mountings, jewellery watches, pearl jewellery, platinum jewellery, silver jewellery and South Sea pearls. Highlights of 2003 include the debut of the Watch & Clock Pavilion (featuring complete watches and clocks and brand-name collections), the Designer Jewellery Galleria for branded jewellery and designer items, the World of Pearl and Gem devoted to pearls and precious stones, and the winning entries of the 4th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition. "With 19 years of development, the jewellery show has evolved into one of the most important trade fairs in the region, and has accumulated hundreds of loyal buyers," observes Anne Chick, TDC senior exhibitions manager. Exhibitors like Swee-keng Cheong, commercial specialist of the US and Foreign Commercial Service agree. "We've received very positive responses from US traders who are all very happy with the trade show. They say this expo is far more international than other shows, as they can meet buyers from all over the world, especially from Asia," she says. HKTDC Jewellery Advisory Committee chairman, Leung Sik Wah JP, believes this year's expanded show reflects strong confidence in the industry as a whole. "The show draws participants from all corners of the globe, and is now ranked as one of the largest, and most comprehensive, in Asia. Hong Kong companies already produce some of the finest jewellery timepieces in the world and view this event as a chance to demonstrate their commitment to quality and cutting-edge innovation," says Leung. Hong Kong is the world's second largest exporter of precious jewellery and, as surging export figures show, is growing in strength. Last year, Hong Kong exported US$2.4tn worth of jewellery products, 17% more than the same period year on year. For those with an eye on building relationships with Chinese mainland firms, the fair is an ideal meeting point. In 2002, the mainland topped the list of overseas visitors with 1,034 buyers, up 37% on the previous year, followed by the US with 903 buyers, up 3.2%. They were followed by Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Korea, Thailand, Australia, Singapore and Italy. The mainland market has great potential, notes Leung. "The mainland economy is growing robustly. Apart from a manufacturing base, it is also a huge domestic market that no one should miss," he says.
