This leading international industry showcase and largest fair of its kind in Asia takes its stand at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from September 1-5 this year. And what better location than Hong Kong, the world's second largest exporter of complete watches in value and quantity in 2001 and the largest and second largest exporter of complete clocks in value and quantity respectively. Last year more than 15,000 visitors flocked to see the enormous range of quality timepiece products that some 720 exhibitors from 13 countries and regions had to offer; all exhibited in more than 29,000 square metres of prime exhibition space. "This year's fair will again be brimming with unique business opportunities," enthuses Anne Chick, senior exhibitions manager of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the event's organiser. "Whether purchasing quality Hong Kong brand names, seeking experienced manufacturers to produce labels, lining up companies to manufacture unique designs or tapping important market intelligence, it's all there at this essential event." Sales manager Finn Sejersen from Denmark echoes Chick's belief that the Hong Kong fair is a must for business. "I've been to this fair for 15 years and I enjoy coming to meet my favourite suppliers," he explains, adding his main interest is wristwatches, movements and spare parts. "We are starting to build up business in the Chinese mainland, giving another good reason for coming to the Hong Kong fair." His enthusiasm is shared by an ever-increasing number of buyers seeking to benefit from recent trade tariff changes that make Hong Kong an ideal launching pad into the burgeoning mainland market. "There really is no better time than now to make business partnerships with Hong Kong companies," claims Chick, noting the immense potential inherent in the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. Beginning from January this year, 374 Hong Kong-made products, including 11 categories of Hong Kong-made watches and watch parts, enjoy zero-tariff access to the mainland under CEPA. "This opportunity allows a unique and highly favourable vantage point to enter this rapidly expanding market," Chick adds. "This year's fair therefore offers an ideal forum to make important contacts and tie-up with Hong Kong manufacturers to enjoy these benefits." Buyers on the lookout for ingenious creativity and style mustn't miss the highly popular Brand Name Gallery, a showcase for fine fashion labels and licensed and original brand watches and clocks. The Gallery has featured annually at the Fair since 2000, with 36 exhibitors showcasing 42 Hong Kong and international labels in 2003. Also displaying unique design innovation is the 21st Hong Kong Watch and Clock Design Competition, which will be showcasing the stunning winning entries and allowing buyers to glimpse a unique view of the industry's future talent. Adding to the fair's chic and pizzazz this year there will be a number of timepiece fashion parades with models showing just how great those new collections and trend-setting designs can look. Those keen to keep track of emerging business trends can catch up with the latest developments at the Asian Watch Industry Conference, where leading experts not only discuss new market directions but also provide invaluable inside knowledge on the flourishing timepiece industry. The outlook for industry business this year is good, according to a survey conducted at last year's Hong Kong Watch and Clock Fair. Some 68% of fair buyers predicted a stronger outlook for 2004, and Hong Kong itself enjoyed a 9% fillip in total exports of watches and clocks in 2003. Those buyers anxious to maximise their time can make use of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council's valuable matchmaking service, which helps team up buyers with suitable local companies before the fair begins. "The fair's website allows buyers to use the Business Matching service two months before the fair starts to schedule appointments with suitable prospective manufacturers," Chick explains. "Business Matching meetings are also organised onsite during the fair, ensuring there will never be a better time to do timepiece business in Hong Kong."
