Today's gamut of stylish multi-dial watches with manifold functions offers appealing alternatives A major player in global horology, Hong Kong supplies an exciting panoply of multi-dial watches distinguished by innovative design, exquisite workmanship and high quality, yet at competitive prices. For example, Sun Tai Watch Co Ltd offers model 29 618 126 ABPr, a stainless steel chronograph with a rectangular case, a Japanese movement and a two-colour PU strap. "The strap can come in one of three colour combinations - orange and black, red and black, or blue and black," says Mandy Tam, Assistant to the Managing Director. Another stainless steel chronograph, model 29 654 009 ESPb, features a rectangular face, a Japanese movement and a black PU strap. "We do not simply manufacture watches for our clients," says Ms Tam. "Apart from offering our standard range, we help them design the whole collection, from idea to sketch, prototyping to production. We also help them build their brand image." The company's designs are dictated by one philosophy. "A watch is not only a functional timepiece, but also reflects the lifestyle and tastes of its wearer," Ms Tam remarks. Sun Tai utilises state-of-the-art equipment such as a CNC machine from Switzerland and a laser-marking machine from France to add value to its products. Trendy multi-dial timepieces are among the latest offerings of Wai Wah Electronics Ltd, as exemplified by model WQS4-0519BK, a men's chronograph watch. "It has a stainless steel case and band, and a mainly black round face. Sporting a Swiss analogue movement, the timepiece shows the hour, minute, second and date," explains Sales and Marketing Manager Brian Lee. The unit price stands at US$25-35 FOB Yantian, depending on the order quantity. "We offer a wide choice of multi-dial watches in different designs, shapes and materials such as stainless steel and alloy, with Swiss or Japanese movements," Mr Lee notes. Unit prices of these timepieces range from US$15-45. "Based on our extensive OEM and ODM experience, we can provide various designs to meet the buyer's requirements," Mr Lee remarks. The US and Europe are the main markets of Wai Wah, which realises that the industry is facing challenges such as rising raw materials costs and price competition from Chinese mainland factories. "We are able to rise to these challenges because of our strengths, including provision of quality assurance. Each of our products comes with a one-year warranty," Mr Lee says. Among the highlights of Hillfond Industrial Ltd's catalogue are chronograph watches in hard-wearing Corian, an advanced blend of natural minerals and acrylic polymer produced by DuPont. "Corian is a lightweight material with durable colours, which are UV-resistant," explains Director Dennis Leung. Corian chronograph watches come in a variety of colours with matching straps and bands. "They are for young people who are well educated and up with fashion trends," Mr Leung says. Orange model 6062CG00S15 features a leather strap, while white model 6062CG00B15 has a band made from Corian and stainless steel. "Both have large square faces and are meant for men, although we also produce unisex and women's models," says Mr Leung, adding that every part of the Corian watch is made using a high-precision CNC machine. "We are proud of our fine workmanship and materials, which we believe are important for success in this industry," he remarks. The company also attaches importance to plating. "I believe the trend in the industry will be to focus on different kinds of plating for a more fashionable look," Mr Leung adds. Hillfond's main market is Europe while Italy stands out as its most successful outlet. "The Italian market readily accepts the most fashionable and innovative designs, such as our Corian watches," says Mr Leung. Apart from chronographs, the firm's product portfolio also includes multi-dial watches with two or three time zones. Another specialist in sophisticated watches is Medix Quartz Industries Ltd, whose range includes multi-time-display versions such as model S13113 (5TZ). "It simultaneously tells the time of four cities or time zones," says Director Steven Mok. The company's multi-time-display collection covers up to seven time zones, Mr Mok advises. In other Medix watch styles, different time measures are displayed on different dials, as exemplified by model S13060(4E). Besides the main dial with hour, minute and second hands, the watch features four smaller dials with pointers showing the month, day of the week, hour and second. Meanwhile, Super Rank (Times) Ltd produces a wide range of men's and ladies' chronograph watches in stainless steel, brass or high-grade alloy. Watch straps also come in a variety of materials such as leather or nylon. The firm has a wide marketing network, including most developed countries in Europe, the US, Japan, Singapore and Thailand. Besides producing its own line, Super Rank also welcomes OEM orders. With such delightful designs and reliable functions, it's little surprise that multi-dial watches from Hong Kong are clocking buoyant sales. TEXT BY JEFF HESELWOOD FAST FACTS
