Innovation, quality and competitive prices are the hallmarks of K & S Mfr & Int'l Traders Ltd's products and the driving forces that underpin the company's business philosophy.

"Whenever we design and manufacture a product, we always look at the smallest details and requirements from the customer's perspective in order to come up with the perfect solution," says President and MD, H. P. Bhasin.

In business for 26 years, K & S has become a leading specialist in making scissors and a diverse range of other products for use in homes, offices and schools.

"When it comes to designing and manufacturing scissors, we are an authority," claims Mr Bhasin, adding that some of the company's best-sellers include top-of-the-range black titanium-coated scissors with a mirror-polished finish and hardwearing fibreglass handles, and children's scissors with safety cases and specific safety features.

K & S also produces kitchen utensils, garden hand tools, high-end gifts and premium items, stationery and office products. Among its latest hits is a combined stapler with staple remover and paper puncher with safety features.

"Our products come in eye-catching designs and vibrant colours," Mr Bhasin says, advising that 90% of product designs are patented in Japan and 60% on the Chinese mainland. "We introduce about 15 new items each year. For one product, it usually takes 4-6 months from design concept to product launch."

To keep K & S's designs fresh, the innovative and far-sighted businessman travels extensively, noting trends and developing new ideas by taking first-hand information from professionals and end-users of the products. Mr Bhasin gauges their requirements, likes and dislikes and meets skilled people around the world to source the most competitive quality materials, utilising their feedback to constantly update the firm's products.

"We watch closely what is happening in our sector and other industries and see how we can implement new designs, quality and colour concepts into our products to ensure they remain competitive and user-friendly," says the businessman, who provides inspiration for the company's creations while a team of Japanese designers and skilled workers develop the shape, colour and technical details to update existing designs and create new ideas and products.

Meeting needs

K & S spares no effort in aligning designs with consumer demands. "We need to understand end-user requirements. We therefore, welcome consumer feedback to stimulate new ideas," remarks Mr Bhasin. "We also take pride in working closely with our clients, listening to what they want and accepting the challenge to fulfil consumers' requirements and expectations and ensure their satisfaction, no matter how difficult it is at times."

A leading example is a range of scissors that was specially made for left-handed people. "It has proved to be a huge success," enthuses Mr Bhasin.

The entrepreneur also cites a flexible kitchen chopping mat that was designed and made after he observed a cook working in her kitchen. "It can be bent to prevent food pieces spilling when being transferred into a cooking pan," he explains.

Quality is also a forte of K & S. "Others may try to copy our designs, but they can never match our quality," Mr Bhasin insists. "The comprehensive production procedure and material details, which are strictly followed by our team of dedicated and skilled workers, ensure consistency of quality in our products. With many years of R&D and manufacturing experience, we know how and where to source the best infrastructure and raw materials in order to create a high-quality, competitively priced product without compromising on quality standards."

Attention to detail

For example, he says, the enterprise uses hardwearing ABS for most of its plastic items and offers full quality guarantees. "In the rare event where we sense some problem, we go all out and discuss the details and requirements directly with the end-user to improve the product."

Using mostly Japan-made tooling and moulds, K & S manufactures at quality-controlled factories on the mainland but handles inspection and packaging at plants in Shanghai and Japan that are equipped with the latest technology and equipment.

"In keeping with our attention to detail and self-explanatory instructions, we ensure our packaging is modern, sharp and market-oriented," Mr Bhasin explains, noting that the company is working to introduce the latest designs and styles in order to reduce packaging material by about 10% to cut costs and minimise environmental impact.

The firm's products are produced mostly for Japanese customers at present. "We are planning to expand into new markets, including Western and Eastern Europe," Mr Bhasin says.

"I believe our products would have a similar appeal in Europe as they do in Japan, because in both markets quality, design and price are important considerations, rather than just the price.

"We want to form partnerships with clients in Europe who appreciate quality together with competitive prices. A long-lasting relationship can only be built when there is no compromise on quality."

K & S puts a premium on customer satisfaction, making sure its products represent value to both its clients and end-users.

"Our business is not simply about the financial aspects, it is about pride in the products and the knowledge that people who buy our products are purchasing good-quality items and receiving value for money," Mr Bhasin sums up.

With this focus on quality, customer-oriented designs and competitive prices, K & S Mfr & Int'l Traders Ltd is definitely a cut above the rest.
